Because any period of time living on the street is extremely dangerous, AFCI has developed a parent education class “What if your Child is Gay?” The goal is to help:
- alleviate the problems that may contribute to the youth’s running away or being rejected
- resolve intra-family problems due to sexual orientation or gender identity
- reunite such youth with their families; whenever appropriate
- help families decide upon a future course of action
The class is designed to help parents make sense of the family dynamics that occur when a child comes out as LGBTQ. Topics include: the coming out experience, the science of sexual orientation, consequences of rejection and how to remain in a healthy relationship.
